Spotlight on ...Pregnancy

Pregnancy may come with some aches and pains, because the body is adapting to the growing baby and the ligaments are softening; this may aggravate any pre-existing neck or back problems.

It will also get more difficult to lift and bend plus fatigue can become an issue as more weight is being carried and sleep can become affected.

Some mothers are affected by SPD (Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction), which is where the small joint at the front of the pelvis can become stretched or separated because of the ligamentous softening of the body, as well as the increasing weight of the baby.

A busy lifestyle may have an effect on the pregnancy and it is important that the pregnant women actively rests and de-stresses.
As the baby grows it makes itself comfortable and quite often mum feels the result of this as indigestion and breathlessness.

Once the baby is born it can take a while for the body to recover, especially if it was a long or complicated delivery.

The pelvic ligaments may have become overstretched and this may contribute to on-going back and neck pains.

Also there will be a lot of lifting and bending with the baby, as well as feeding and getting used to this new and very demanding person. It is very common for new mums to stop looking after themselves to meet the needs of the baby. But it is vitally important that mum is looked after as well, as her wellbeing is vital to the babies growth and development.

Unresolved birth stresses may contribute to different problems as the baby grows and it may be advisable for the baby to have an osteopathic check up after birth.

Osteopathic treatment is very gentle and suitable for very small babies. it's never too early to start!
